The well-used theatre in the village of Thornton lacked adequate changing space for larger productions, and only offered one main performance space. The Practice was commissioned by Wyre Borough Council to provide an extension to the rear entrance, and developed a design which provides much needed flexibility in the way the building can be used. By relocating the office accommodation, we were able to design a more spacious entrance foyer, which in turn gave access to the main theatre and also to a new function room with bar facility. A large folding screen allows this space to be divided, so that half can supplement the existing changing rooms, especially useful for productions with large numbers of children participating. The interior design uses high quality finishes to match the existing, and externally the character of the elevations was maintained by saving and reusing brick and stone features.
