Cumbrian Business Park offices approved
Planning Approval has been granted for a new office development at Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, as part of the Waterfront Business Park.
It will provide 2300m² of flexible office space, with the building broken into three blocks linked by nodes which reduce the overall mass of the building. The two storey building will have east and west elevations 8.5 metres high, while the north and west elevations which face the car park will be 7.2 metres.
The plan of the building has been designed carefully laid out to permit natural ventilation throughout and which, in conjunction with other design features will enable it to achieve a BREEAM rating of 'Very Good'.
Prestwich Pharmacy, Greater Manchester
Work is now well under way on the new Pharmacy Building at Prestwich in Greater Manchester.
The Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust is developing a scheme to extend and develop the existing Pharmacy Building on its Prestwich site to enable pharmacy services to be provided in-house throughout the Trust with the Prestwich Pharmacy becoming the Trust hub dispensary and base for clinical pharmacists – serving satellite pharmacy locations and community team bases.
Tom Mellor exhibition opens
A major retrospective exhibition of work by Tom Mellor OBE has opened in Lytham, Lancashire, where the talented designer began this practice almost 70 years ago.
Organised by the Lytham Heritage Group, the exhibition is in two parts, the first during November and December 2016 showcasing the breadth of TM's design skills from fabric and furniture to architecture and paintings. A second exhibition starts in February 2017 displaying even more of his work, especially the architectural work of the practice in its early years, and his extensive output of paintings.
With valuable contributions from his son David Mellor, and son-in-law Michael Tooley, the exhibition has uncovered a number of previously unknown works and led to a better understanding of his position in the design world of post-war Britain.
Progress at Blackpool Business Park
The first phase of our latest Business Park scheme within the Blackpool Airport Enterprise Zone has been completed and handed over to the client, with the first units already occupied.
The overall scheme provides a range of different sized units, with approval for BI, B2 and B8 uses.
Residential scheme completed on Tyneside
Our Axwell Courtyard housing development is complete and has been released for sale. The development is the second phase of the overall development of Axwell Hall, Tyneside and comprises 27 high specification dwellings arranged around a new courtyard adjacent to the Hall, which is Grade 2* listed.
Due to the sensitivity nature of the site the outward facing elevations pay respect to the Hall, but the inward facing elevations have a contemporary twist. The accommodation created is 9 No 2 Bed Apartments, 4 No 3 Bed, 3 Storey Houses, 7 No 3 Bed, 2 Storey Houses and 7 No 2 Bed, 2 Storey Houses. The courtyard arrangement generates a welcoming community feel and is part of the concept of “Life in the Park” The development is set within the extensive landscaped grounds of one of the region’s most prestigious country estates.
We are delighted that the development has been shortlisted for the RICS North East Awards in the Residential category
Supporting World of Work (WOW) Event
The Practice is proud to have taken part in the World of Work event hosted by the Brathay Trust. The event was supported by the High Sheriff of Cumbria, Sam Rayner, who said “Skills are vital to the future of the region and the event is about giving our young people a chance to meet some very successful local businesses and to challenge themselves to show they have the top ten employability skills”.
The aim of the day was to inspire and motivate young people between the ages of 14 – 18 through a range of interactive tasks and activities by invited companies.
The intention was to help the young people focus on and to think about the World of Work which hopefully helped open their eyes to opportunities they may not have been aware of before.
Kirkbie Kendal Creative & Performing Arts Centre officially opened
After the successful completion of the full refurbishment, reconfiguration & extension of an existing former sports pavilion to form a Creative & Performing Arts Centre for our long standing client Kirkbie Kendal School the Centre has officially been opened by Westmorland & Lonsdale MP Tim Farron.
We worked closely with the school staff during the design development stages to ensure that the optimum layout and best use of both the existing and new spaces was achieved, within the available budget of £900,000.00. This allowed the building to be fully refurbished, included re-configuration of the internal spaces, together with an extension, re-roofing, new windows, re-pointing, new internal finishes and replacement of all the mechanical and electrical installations
St. Wilfred's Drug and Alcohol Dependency Centre completed
The building was originally designed as St Wilfrid’s School, around 1814 and has Grade 2 Listed Status and had been used for a number of other uses since the school closed. Our NHS Client took a lease on the property to convert it into a Drug & Alcohol Centre.
The design for the conversion had to take into account and accommodate the historically important features, the most important of which were the cast iron columns, which were also utilised as gas pipes to provide gas lighting, together with timber folding screens on the ground and first floors.
Lakeland Distribution Centre Phase 4 handed over
The project is the latest phase of a development programme for the Centre, which the Practice has been involved with for over 20 years.
The new facility representing a capital investment of £10m is fully integrated with the other phases on the overall site and almost doubles the existing storage capacity of the centre and provides much needed additional capacity for the successful kitchenware company.
As with the earlier phases of the development the site is on the flood plain of the River Kent which presented significant challenges in the design as the flood plain capacity had to be re-provided as part of the development. In order to reduce the impact of this substantial building within the landscape, the building is surrounded by manmade drumlins and natural landscaping including a small lake which control the water discharge into the river.
