rural housing - backbarrow, cumbria

Part of the Two Castles Housing Assocation programme of low cost rural housing for locals in Cumbria.
The development comprised four, two bedroom family flats and two, two bedroom elderly people's houses.
Materials were chosen to be sympathetic to the location, being white roughcast render, natural slate roofs and high-performance stained timber windows.
The site has very strong historical connections being overlooked by the line of the now enthusiast-run Haverthwaite to Lakeside railway, a remnant of the old Furness Railway, and adjoining the home of John Wilkinson the pioneer iron-maker who worked for Abraham Darby at Ironbridge in Shropshire.
The railway embankment forms the rear of the site and being too steep to effectively manage as a garden it was sowed with a wild flower and grass seed mix resulting in a spectacular display of flowers each summer and requiring minimum maintenance.
